On Wednesday, December 3rd at 5 pm, the Physicum Gallery (W. Ostwaldi 1, Tartu) will open exhibition "A fragment from Valdur Ohakas creative decades". The exhibition is open on weekdays from 9 am to 6 pm and will remain open until January 6, 2026.
Valdur Ohakas (1925 - 1998) gained fame in the second half of the 20th century primarily as a painter, but he was also a passionate draftsman. From 1944, Ohakas studied at the Tartu State Art Institute (formerly known as the Pallas Art School), but after his arrest (1949) he was sent to a prison camp, from which he was released in 1956. Although Valdur Ohakas can be considered an extremely prolific artist, a large part of his work was destroyed in a fire at his Merivälja home in 1991. December 26 marks the 100th anniversary of the artist's birth.
The commemorative exhibition has two opposing gallery walls. One of them displays a selection of Valdur Ohaka's work from the 1940s and 1950s. The other wall has a small overview of the artist's painting work.
At the opening of the anniversary exhibition, it will also be possible to view the newly published art album “Valdur Ohakas 100. Creative Decades”. The art album contains more than 150 color and black-and-white reproductions, as well as memoirs. Actors Guido Kangur and Heino Seljamaa, artists Andrus Rõuk, Albert Gulk and Ilmar Kruusamäe, art collectors Aimar Jugaste and Mart Erik - all of them have their own story to tell about the artist and his work.
The anniversary exhibition and art album were compiled by artist Ilmar Kruusamäe.
