Heikki Junninen's photo exhibition "Polaarhommik ja aerosooli vabrik" will be on view at the Physicum Gallery (W, Ostwaldi 1, Tartu) from 18. February to 31 March 2026. The exhibition opens on 18. February at 17, and can be viewed on weekdays from 9 am to 18.
Heikki Junninen graduated with a Master of Environmental Sciences degree in Environmental Chemistry from the University of Kuopio, Finland, in 2001. His scientific career continued with a PhD at the JRC Ispra in Italy, which eventually led to a PhD in Atmospheric Physics from the University of Helsinki (2014). He currently works as a Professor of Environmental Physics at the University of Tartu and is also a newly elected member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences.
The material in this exhibition was photographed during two scientific expeditions: in the Himalayas in Nepal (2014) and in northern Greenland (2015). The aim of both expeditions was to study the mechanisms of formation of new atmospheric particles. In Greenland, the focus was particularly on measuring the effects of the arctic dawn – the return of sunlight – after months of darkness. In the Himalayas, the effect of mountains on the formation of particles in the upper layers of the troposphere was studied.
